The new movie award season has just begun. The Venice Film Festival winners are announced on last Saturday. Ang Li took home the top prize, the Golden Lion, for the second time after his Brokeback Mountain won 2 years back. This years is more meaningful for Chinese because it's been 3 years in a roll for chinese director to bring home the top price, last years the prize was won by Jia Zhang-Ke for the movie Sanxia Haoren (Still Life). It's kinna thrilled when I read the paper this morning, though it has nothing to do with me, but i always like Ang Li. My favorite movie of his is Hsi yen (The Wedding Banquet). And another Hurray for Cate Blanchett by winning the best actress for her portrayal of Bob Dylan in the movie, I'm Not There. I told you, she's good. And well done to Brad Pitt for the best actor award. I thought nobody would care about his movie performance after he has got so many things going around his over exposed private life with Jolie and their 6 kids?? or 8? Critics say Brad's win is more baffling than Li's win. Check out the winner list from the official site.
Here start the oscar race for 2007, my favorite for this year is definitely Cate Blanchett for The Golden Ages, and Angelina Jolie for The Mighty Heart. Both won before for the supporting role, it must be a great competition between them. But it's not looking good for Lust, even though it won big in the Venice. Come on, it's a foreign language film (for them), and directed by an asian. I don't even think it has the chance, Brokeback lost because of the theme, american is american, you think they would let a foreign language film to win?!? No way. Maybe Hairspray would stand a better chance. Haha.
